ESSEX WING NATIONAL AIR CADET ADVENTURE TRAINING CENTRE (WINDERMERE) PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND ADVENTURE TRAINING COURSE 2017

NOTE  As this is not a school holioday period, there is a letter available for Headteachers fully explaining the justification for allowing time off school

 1. Introduction: OC’s are invited to nominate Cadets wishing to undertake the Essex Wing week at the National Air Cadet Adventure Training Centre Windermere (NACATC) during the week 13th – 20th May 2017 inclusive.

2. Course Content: The programmed activities are likely to include Duke of Edinburgh expeditions at Bronze and Silver levels, abseiling, rock-climbing, canoeing, mountain cycling and other leadership development activities. The course aims to promote the development of personal skills, and promotes character building and teamwork. Travel is by coach and the fully inclusive cost of the course is £130.

 3. Eligibility: Cadets must be enrolled and physically fit to take a full and active part in the planned programme, which includes physically challenging elements. This course is historically very popular and therefore Squadron Commanders are encouraged to put forward cadets who have something specific to gain from the course, i.e. Cadets seeking either Bronze or Silver expeditions (Practice or Qualifying)

 4. Initial Bids: Required by Friday 24th February and by email to the Course Adjutant, CI Sophie Adams, via the following address, preferably by use of the attached excel spreadsheet. Formal offers of places will be confirmed by Friday 3rd March 2017.

5. Payment Plan:
 a. Course Fee - £130

 b. A minimum Deposit of £50 is required once an offer of place is confirmed (Friday 3rd March) and no later than Thursday 31st March 2017.

 c. Full Balance is required no later than Friday 7th April 2017. d. Preferred method of payment is by BACS - cheques will be accepted.

6. Place Confirmation: The centre can only accommodate a maximum of 20 male and 10 female cadets.

Places are available to all Squadrons within Essex Wing and are likely to be taken very quickly.

Initial allocation of places will be confirmed by 3rd March. A reserve list will be in place to allow for any subsequent withdrawals. Applicants are to make themselves aware of the Essex Wing Standard Terms and Conditions which are attached and apply to this course.

 8. Please Note - Planning Day: All course attendees are required to attend a Planning Day on Saturday 8th April (1000-1800 Hours) at 276 (Chelmsford) Squadron HQ. Full details will follow but day will include Kit briefing and Route Planning for DofE

                                               Date  12 – 18 Feb 2017 (School half term)

The above camp will focus on WW2 and the Cold war.  In previous years we have run this very successful and enjoyable camp.  There are numerous visits to sites, most of which have a guided tour

The WW2 part of the camp focuses on the “Final solution “. including a visit to either Sachsenhausen or Ravensbruuck concentration camp.

The cold war section focuses on the Berlin wall and the occupying powers, including a visit to the prison run by the secret police.

Other sites visited :
Wannsee conference
Nuclear bunker and second world war bunker
Site of gestapo HQ during WW2
HQ where the army plotted to kill Hitler
Checkpoint Charlie

Accomodation will be in a youth hostel.  The cost is for dinner, bed and breakfast, lunches are financed by cadets themselves

Cost = £250.  This is heavily subsidised by the Squadron Association
A non – refundable deposit of £70 will be required by end October
Thereafter, £50 per month (2 months) and a final payment of £80

A letter will go out tonight (8th Sept) to gauge the interest

Our Recent Successes

After a very busy weekend of the South Sector Drill Competition and Inter-Squadron Swimming Competition I am very happy to announce the following successes.

Banner Drill - 1st in South Sector

Our Banner Team will now go forward to the Essex Wing finals this weekend.

Swimming:
Cdt Goodwin - 1st junior boys breaststroke
Cdt Mitchell - 3rd senior girls backstroke and freestyle
The points gained from these medals meant we came:
3rd in Essex Wing for junior boys swimming
3rd in Essex Wing for senior girls swimming

This is an excellent achievement for both cadets; Cdt Goodwin will now go to the Inter-Wing competition and represent Essex Air Cadets.

Well done also to Cdt Attridge for his participation in the event, it would have been good to see more of our cadets attending this.
